「鳴かぬなら、殺してしまへホトトギス」信長の人柄を表すこの有名な歌は、平戸藩主・松浦静山の随筆『甲子夜話』に収録されたもの（詠み人知らず）。短気で苛烈な人物像を表していると取れますが、信長自ら盟約を破った事はなく、
非常に律儀な面も備えていました。
『日本史』を執筆した宣教師ルイス・フロイスの記録によれば信長は、「長身痩躯で髭は少なく、声は甲高く、粗野」な印象であった様です。
また好奇心旺盛で南蛮への関心が高く、西洋帽子やビロードのマントなど洋装を好み、晩年は戦場へ西洋鎧を身につけて赴いたそうです。
身分の分け隔てなく庶民ともよくつき合い、お盆には安土城の至る所に明かりをつけ、城下町の住人の目を楽しませる、イベント好きな一面もありました。

“If a cuckoo doesn’t sing, kill it.” This is the famous song describing Nobunaga’s character. This song (writer unknown) is in the essay “Kasshiyawa” written by Matsuura Seizan, the Lord of Hirado domain. The song tells you Nobunaga was quick-tempered and fierce, but he was also very faithful. He never broke alliances by himself. According to the record of Luis Frois, a writer of Historia de lapam (Nihonshi), “Nobunaga was tall and skinny, had little beard, high- pitched voice, and rough,” He also had a great curiosity and high interest to Southern barbarian (Nanban.) He liked the western style such as a hat and a vervet cape etc. He went to the war wearing the western armor in the last years of his life. He also liked getting along with commoners and having event that entertained people living around the castle, such as putting lights on the Azuchi Castle on the Bon festival.
