直江兼続とは、上杉景勝に仕えた戦国武将で、「愛」の字をかたどった前立ての兜を身に着けていたことで有名です。青年時代に景勝の近習の一人として登場し、その才覚を見出されて筆頭家老となり政治外交軍事全ての面で活躍しました。その仕事ぶりは「万事において隙なく行う」と評されています。
石田三成と親交が深く、関ヶ原の合戦の発端となる会津征伐を引き起こし、西軍の一翼を担ったといわれています。徳川家康が送った上杉家への問責書に対する返書として兼続が作成した、いわゆる「直江状」は名文として称され兼続の名を後世にまで残すこととなりました。

Naoe Kanetsugu was a warlord served Uesugi Kagekatsu, and he is famous for wearing the saurai helmet (kabuto) with Maedate shaped he character of “愛” (Love.) He was the one of Kagekatsu’s personal aides (Kinju) when he was young, and became the chief advisor because of his outstanding talent. He used his ability for politics, diplomacy, and military act. His work was appraised as “Do everything perfectly.” He had a deep friendship with Ishida Mitsunari. He caused Aizu Seibatsu that led up to Battle of Sekigahara, and played a role in Western Army. He is also famous for the letter he wrote, called “Naoejo” which is the reply to the letter of censure Ieyasu sended to the Uesugi clan.
