Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a prominent military leader of the Sengoku period who rose from a humble background while serving under Oda Nobunaga, eventually achieving the unification of Japan. When the Incident at Honnōji occurred during his campaign in the Chūgoku region, he swiftly returned in what became known as the “Great Return from Chūgoku,” defeated Akechi Mitsuhide, and secured a leading position within the Oda clan. He then expanded his influence through the Battle of Shizugatake against Shibata Katsuie and his conflict with Tokugawa Ieyasu at Komaki and Nagakute. By bringing various regional powers in Kyushu and the Kanto area under his authority, he advanced the unification of the country. As Kampaku and later Daijō-daijin, he established the Toyotomi government and implemented policies such as the sword hunt and the Taikō land survey, which helped lay the foundations for early modern governance in Japan.
